Summary of Country Studies
The
objective of the project was to identify barriers to implementation of
renewable energy technologies (RETs) and propose measures to overcome such
barriers.
Renewable energy implementation projects in
Egypt, Ghana and Zimbabwe were studied by national institutions to find
out the reasons for success or failure of specific projects or
technologies. A highlight of the project was involvement of various
stakeholders in each country study.
A summary of the studies brings together
the experiences from the case studies, and generalises the lessons learnt
for dissemination and use in promoting RETs.

The national studies were presented at the
African High-Level Regional Meeting on Energy and Sustainable Development,
held in Nairobi in January, 2001. The inputs from the meeting were provided
to the ninth session of the Commission for Sustainable Development (CSD9)
through a ministerial declaration of African countries on strategies for
action and ways of strengthening regional co-operation in the areas of
energy and sustainable development.
The project is part of the United
Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and was sponsored by the Danish
International Development Assistance (Danida).
The project was implemented by UCCEE. The case studies
were carried out by the New and Renewable Energy Authority (Egypt), the Kumasi
Institute of Technology and Environment (Ghana) and the Southern
Centre for Energy and Environment (Zimbabwe).
